Legal Cashier / Practice Manager (12 Months Maternity Cover)
We are seeking an experienced and highly organised Legal Cashier / Practice Manager to provide 12 months’ maternity cover within an established multi-practice area firm specialising in property and private client. This varied role offers the opportunity to oversee the firm’s legal accounts, financial administration and day-to-day practice operations.
The successful candidate will combine strong technical knowledge of legal cashiering with practical experience of practice management. They will maintain accurate financial records, support the firm’s compliance obligation in cashiering, coordinate administrative processes and work closely with fee earners, support staff and senior colleagues.
Key responsibilities:
Manage the firm’s day-to-day legal cashiering function, maintaining accurate client account and office account records in accordance with the Solicitors Accounts Rules and firm procedures.
Process receipts, payments, transfers, invoices, disbursements, client account transactions and office account transactions accurately and within required timescales.
Prepare and process electronic payments, bank transfers, cheques and other financial transactions, ensuring appropriate authorisation and supporting documentation is obtained.
Complete regular bank, client account and office account reconciliations, investigate discrepancies and escalate potential breaches, risks or irregularities promptly.
Monitor work in progress, outstanding bills, aged balances and unclaimed funds, providing reports and supporting effective financial control across the firm.
Oversee general practice administration, including office systems, suppliers, facilities, equipment, utilities, post, records management and relationships with external service providers.
Support the smooth running of the office by coordinating administrative processes, identifying operational issues and implementing practical improvements where appropriate.
Assist with human resources and staff administration, including recruitment support, onboarding, holiday and sickness records, training arrangements, payroll information and personnel documentation.
Work collaboratively with senior colleagues and teams across the firm, contributing to business planning, risk management, service improvement and the effective delivery of legal services.
Maintain confidentiality, professional standards and a high level of accuracy when handling sensitive financial, client and employee information.
Key skills and experience:
Previous experience as a legal cashier or accounts manager
Strong working knowledge of the Solicitors Accounts Rules, client accounts, office accounts, bank reconciliations, client ledgers and legal cashiering procedures.
Experience processing legal financial transactions, including receipts, payments, transfers, bills, disbursements, completion monies and the return of client funds.
Good understanding of legal compliance requirements, including anti-money laundering, client due diligence, data protection and risk management.
Previous experience supporting office management, facilities, suppliers, human resources or other practice management functions would be advantageous.
