Family Solicitor
We are seeking a skilled Family Solicitor to join our client's busy, client-focused family law team. The successful candidate will manage a varied caseload of family law matters, deliver excellent client care, ensure compliance with regulatory and firm procedures, and contribute to efficient team workflows. This role offers professional development and exposure to a wide range of family law work including financial remedy proceedings, children law, cohabitation disputes (all private matters). Hybrid working available.
Key responsibilities:
Act for clients throughout family law matters from initial instruction to conclusion, including conducting client interviews, preparing proceedings, negotiating settlements and representing clients at court and alternative dispute resolution forums where authorised.
Prepare, review and execute legal documentation including pleadings, statements, consent orders, Form A financial statements, Schedule of Assets, parenting plans, and correspondence, ensuring documents are accurate and compliant with firm precedents and regulatory requirements.
Provide clear, practical legal advice to clients on finances, children matters, relationship breakdowns, cohabitation disputes, injunctions and other related issues, setting realistic expectations and options at each stage.
Carry out client identity checks and support anti-money laundering (AML) compliance, maintaining robust audit trails and accurate, audit-ready case files in line with firm procedures.
Liaise with clients, opposing parties, counsel, Cafcass, local authorities, medical experts, social workers and other professionals to gather evidence, coordinate reports and manage case progression professionally.
Draft and negotiate settlement agreements, including financial remedies and child arrangements, and prepare court bundles and witness statements for hearings.
Manage case budgets, record time accurately, support billing and fee recovery processes and assist with financial forecasting for matters in accordance with firm policies.
Respond to routine client and third-party enquiries by telephone and email, escalating complex issues appropriately and keeping clients informed of progress throughout.
Contribute to continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to streamline processes, update precedents and assist with the rollout of practice management technology and workflow enhancements.
Provide support and supervision to junior team members where required, sharing knowledge of procedures and assisting with induction and training activities.
Key skills and experience required:
Qualified solicitor (or equivalent) with minimum 5 years PQE, demonstrable experience in family law within a law firm or public sector setting, handling a range of matters such as financial remedies, children proceedings, injunctions and related disputes.
Good understanding of family procedure rules, court processes and relevant legislation including Children Act 1989 and Matrimonial Causes Act 1973.
Experience of preparing court documents, witness statements and negotiating settlements; advocacy experience or willingness to undertake advocacy where permitted is desirable.
Familiarity with safeguarding issues and working with vulnerable clients, including understanding of domestic abuse indicators and appropriate referral routes.
Knowledge of AML and client identification requirements and experience maintaining audit-ready files and compliance documentation.
Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities, meet deadlines and maintain attention to detail across multiple matters.
Confident and professional communicator with excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to liaise effectively with clients, colleagues and external contacts.
Proactive, reliable and solutions-focused with a willingness to develop technical knowledge, embrace new systems and support team improvements.
