Key Responsibilities in Family Law Paralegal Role
- Supporting solicitors with a diverse caseload of family law matters including divorce, child arrangements, financial settlements, pre-nuptial and cohabitation agreements, and cases involving domestic abuse.
- Drafting and preparing court documents, witness statements, applications, and correspondence, ensuring compliance with current family law legislation and court requirements.
- Conducting legal research and assisting in the preparation of case summaries and bundles for hearings.
- Managing client communication—providing updates, answering queries, and gathering necessary information in a compassionate and professional manner.
- Liaising with clients, third parties, courts, barristers, and mediation services to progress files effectively and efficiently.
- Accurately maintaining files and case management systems, ensuring all actions are properly recorded and compliant with SRA, AML and GDPR standards.
Essential Skills and Experience for Family Law Paralegals
- Prior experience as a paralegal or legal assistant within a family law practice, with the ability to handle tasks independently under solicitor supervision.
- Sound understanding of divorce, child law, financial disputes, and protective orders within the context of UK family law.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact empathetically with clients from all backgrounds.
- Meticulous attention to detail in drafting legal documents and preparing bundles for court proceedings.
- Strong organisational skills, including the management of multiple priorities and meeting strict deadlines.
- Proficient user of legal case management systems and Microsoft Office, with a willingness to learn new platforms and processes.
